Since child custody is often a major component of any divorce, when I am working with a divorcing couple, I explore options that are designed to keep the children in the forefront.

If there is a custody battle, I will try to keep the parents focused on what is best for the children. Oftentimes I recommend and refer my clients to family counseling as a way for the couple to see what effect their divorce may be having on their children and the family as a whole.

I often urge clients to utilize mediation as an alternative to traditional divorce. The mediation process is far less adversarial and costly. During mediation, if child custody issues arise, the mediator will be able to address concerns that the parents may have over visitation schedules or parenting plans. Mediation will help to promote an environment whereby parents are working together for the best interest of the children.
